Connecting to the SOM UNIX Servers

WinSCP is an implementation of the SCP (secure copy) application for Windows platforms. For our purposes, it's a graphical SCP client which allows us to connect and transfer files securely to unix machines.

First, you will need to download the ICF support pack. This archive contains several files needed to connect to the SOM research network.

[Click here to download the Research Support Pack]

Download this file to your desktop, and extract the contents of the file to:

  1. Windows 2000/NT - C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32.
  2. Windows XP - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.

NOTE:You will need [Winzip] to unzip this file.

Start the WinSCP Client

To create a new connection, simply run putty from the start menu. Click on the Start menu, then click on Run and type: winscp.

Start -> Run -> winscp

The Login Window

When WinSCP first loads, you will see a "Configuration" screen. This screen allows you to save configuration information, and will allow you to easily connect to the servers at a later date.

Start by filling in the following information:

  • Host name - Type in the machine name you want to connect to. Example: tiamat.som.yale.edu
  • User name - This is the userid you will connect with, use your Yale NetID, or account name.
  • Password - Type the password for your account in this box.

Connecting to a new host

Next, click the "Stored sessions" link in the left portion of the window. This window allows you to save your information for later use.

Click the "Save..." button located on the right side of the screen. A smaller window (shown below) will pop-up. Type in a name you will easily remember, we suggest using the default (userid@host). To connect to the host, simply click the "Login" button.

If you are connecting to the machine for the first time, you will see a window similar to the one pictured below. Do not be alarmed, this window is asking you if you wish to save the "key" for the associated host. By saying "yes" to this window, you will avoid the need to respond to this question each time you connect to the associated server.

Copying Files

Once you have logged in, you will see the main file window. This window allows you to copy files between your machine and the UNIX system. You can "Drag and Drop" files to the right portion of the window, or browse your local hard-drive on the left portion of the window.
