Connecting to the SOM UNIX Servers

PuTTY is an implementation of the Telnet and SSH protocols for Windows platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator. For our purposes, it's an SSH client which allows us to easily connect to unix machines.

If you have not already, you will need to download the Yale SOM Support Pack. This archive contains several files needed to connect to the SOM research network.

Download this file to your desktop, and extract the contents of the file to:

  1. Windows 2000/NT - C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32.
  2. Windows XP - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.

NOTE:You will need [Winzip] to unzip this file.

The Configuration Window

When putty first loads, you will see a "Configuration" screen. This screen allows you to save configuration information, and will allow you to easily connect to the servers at a later date.

Open a new connection

To open a new connection, select the server name under Saved Sessions and click the Open button located at the bottom of the window.

If you are connecting to the machine for the first time, you will see an alert regarding the server's host key. Do not be alarmed, this window is asking you if you wish to save the "key" for the associated host. By saying "yes" to this window, you will avoid the need to respond to this question each time you connect to the associated server.

Once you have accepted the "key", you will be prompted with a login window. Simply type in your Yale netid and password and you will be connected to the system.
