Brightness issue under OS X 10.4 on various powerbooks
If you are encountering an issue on your powerbook where the LCDs gamma appears to be turned down completely, this is a known bug to apple (no information on the fix). That said, we found this web page http://scrap.dasgenie.com/articles/2005/05/01/mac-os-x-10-4-tiger-no-more-brightness-control-on-tibook-800-mhz that describes various workarounds. We found that the following steps (although slightly redundant, do work):
1.) Shutdown the powerbook. 2.) Remove the battery. 3.) Lift the keyboard, and press the reset button for one minute. This is located in the upper right quadrant beneath the keyboard. I suggest using a pen to press the button. 4.) Boot your mac with: ""Open Apple (command)-option-O-F"" . This will boot you into open-firmware. 5.) type the follow commands: ""reset-nvram"" and "" reset-all"" 6.) The machine will reboot, and your display should be set back to normal. Please be aware that until apple releases a fix, your brightness keys will not work, and the brightness sliders underneath displays will not be present.
Changing Default JavaVM
OSX keeps prior versions of the Java JDE's installed, this allows you to choose which version you wish to use for your development projects. To quickly change the OSX default here is a script:

Interoperability with Windows 2003 Server
- From Administrative Tools, open Domain Controller Security Settings.
- Go to Local Policies then Security Options.
- Scroll down to find the entry Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always). Set this to Disabled.
- The only thing left to do is to reload the security policy, as changes don’t otherwise take effect for some time. Open up a command window and type:
gpupdate
