Laptop Purchase Program
In order to successfully function at Yale SOM, students are required to own a laptop that can handle the daily functions of an SOM Student. Each summer SOM IT offers a number of laptop choices through a laptop purchasing program.
By purchasing through the Laptop Program you will receive a laptop that is completely functional on the SOM network. The machine will also be preloaded with software, such as Microsoft Office 2007 and Norton Antivirus. The laptop will have a 3 year next business day warranty, along with accidental damage coverage. You will also have the full support of the SOM Helpdesk for repairs, reinstallations, etc. The laptops offered in this year’s program are the HP 2710p Tablet, the HP 2510p Laptop, and the Lenovo t61 laptop. The specs of each machine and the links to purchase them can be found here: https://codex.som.yale.edu/index.php/Image:Laptop_program_2010.pdf. Note: If you choose to order an HP Model, the machine will be sent to Yale SOM and will be ready for pickup at school startup. The $130 fee added onto the HP laptops is a non-taxable processing and handling charge.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In most classes faculty allow use of a PC to take notes only if it is a tablet PC operated in tablet mode.
For the first time we are offering a Macbook; the specs can be found here: https://codex.som.yale.edu/index.php/Image:Laptop_program_2010.pdf. A follow up email will be sent to the Class once it is online. If you choose to buy a Macbook or if you are coming to Yale with an Apple laptop, you may experience some compatibility issues. Note: For full functionality in the SOM environment and coursework it is recommended that you run Windows on a Virtual Machine environment (such as Fusion or Parallels) or through Boot Camp. Students will be responsible for obtaining their own copies of Windows Vista or XP Professional as well as Fusion or Parallels software (Boot Camp is included with the Macbook). We cannot repair your machine onsite, but we can assist you in coordinating repairs with a vendor or the Apple Store. We can perform troubleshooting at the Helpdesk and correct most system/software errors.
If you are bringing your own laptop you will receive best effort support from the Helpdesk. We cannot repair your machine, but will be happy to assist you, following the guidelines of your warranty. You will receive a Microsoft Office 2007 CD at orientation and I will send a follow-up email to the Class containing information on how to configure your laptop for the SOM environment. We do not give minimum specifications on current laptops, however you must have a 802.11b/g or 802.11g wireless card if you choose to connect wirelessly and if you want to install Microsoft Office 2007 you need 2GB of Memory in order for it to run optimally. Note: No version of Windows Home, whether XP or Vista, will work on the SOM network. You will have problems printing and the Helpdesk will not support your laptop. SOM Helpdesk will only support English Language Operating Systems.
If you have any questions please contact the SOM Helpdesk 203.432.7777 or https://service.som.yale.edu (login yale\netid and password). We are happy to answer any questions or assist you in choosing the laptop that will suit you best.
