How to install and use Exceed to run Unix applications on your Windows computer

Install Exceed

-From a Windows computer connected to the Yale network, go to Start\Run, type "\\som-os-orion\Exceed\setup.exe" and hit Enter to run the Exceed installer.

-Accept all the default install options.

-Reboot Windows after the installation completes.

Start Exceed to be able to run X applicaitons

-Click the "Hummingbird Connectivity V8.0" icon on your desktop.

-Double click on the "Exceed" folder.

-Double click on "Exceed" shortcut.

-NOTE: you can also go to START\All Programs\Hummingbird Connectivity V8.0\Exceed\Exceed

-Exceed will run minimized on the Windows taskbar.

-NOTE: Exceed must be running while using X applications.

Install the SOM Support Pack Software

The Yale SOM Support Pack contains putty which you can use to connect to the Unix servers and start X applications to run on your Windows computer. Instructions for downloading and installing the support pack are available at The Yale SOM Support Pack

Open an X application (xterm) via putty on Windows with Exceed

-With Exceed still running in the background

-In Windows, go to Start\Run, type "putty" and hit Enter.

-Configure putty via the directions at Putty Windows SSH Client Tutorial and then proceed with the following steps.

-Under Session, in the Saved Sessions section, select the session you use to connect to the Unix server. Example, [userid]@marduk.som.yale.edu (replace [userid] with your Unix userid).

-Click the Load button.

-Under Connection\SSH\X11, check the "Enable X11 forwarding" option.

-For the "X display location" type: localhost:0.0

-Under Session, click the Save button.

-Click the Open button.

-When prompted, enter your userid and hit ENTER.

-RECOMMENDED, enter the key passphrase if you entered one while saving the private key file.

-At the Unix command prompt type: xterm

-Hit Enter.

-The Unix xterm application should run on your Windows computer.

-NOTE: Use this same method to run other Unix X enabled applications on Windows, besides xterm. Simply type the name of the X enabled application at the Unix command prompt, along with any required arguments or switches. Hit Enter and it will on Windows via Exceed.
